Tangail is one of the natural disaster prone areas in Bangladesh. It experiences every year one or other type of disasters like flood, cyclone, river erosion etc. causing colossal losses of resources and untold miseries to a sizeable numbers of people. SSS stands beside them in such bad times and extends hands to its members in their recouping and rehabilitation efforts as well as to prepare for any such onslaught of natural calamities in future by raising awareness about possible crisis like tornado/cyclone, earthquake, flood, forest fire etc at the first instance and taking long run precautionary measures to withstand. The Disaster Management Programme of SSS covers almost all Unions of its operational districts and the main activities under the programme are: - Direct assistance to its affected members to overcome the aftermaths of such calamities in the forms of relief distribution and health care services
- Motivating and assisting the local government bodies and the Disaster Management Committees at Union, Upazila and District levels
- Training on risks of different types of disasters and preparedness thereabout
- Organizing Workshops/Seminars in collaboration with NGOs/CBOs on issues of disaster preparedness, risk avoidance and better management of resources likely to be affected by natural calamities
- Organizing community meetings, street drama, folk song, essay competitions in educational institutions on issues of raising public awareness about different nature of disasters
- Celebrating Disaster Management Day and organization of rallies, public discussion meetings, etc.
As a result of SSS activities in the line, awareness about, and preparedness for, various nature of disasters seem to have increased among the general public in its areas of operation, saving life and resources. The SSS effort in this regard is well recognized by the general public, particularly its group members. |
