The importance of safe drinking water to improve the health status of the rural disregarded but organized group of people is undeniable. The program of installation of tube-wells to arrange safe drinking water for this class of people has been implemented by SSS to protect them from waterborne diseases.
A credit facility within the amount of Tk. 2000/- to Tk. 3000/- for installation of a hand tube-well is extended for interested beneficiaries under this program. Also the activity to ensure arsenic-free water through preventive and curative measures has been going on within the area of operation. About 70 million people in Bangladesh are deprived of proper sanitation facilities - only 1% of them being annually brought under improved sanitation programme. There are 250000 households in Tangail district who have no access to approvable sanitation facilities; as against 159845 households out of 537270 having some sort of such facilities in eleven (11) Upazilas of the district, as revealed by a survey conducted by DPHE. Aimed at improved quality of life of its members, SSS introduced in 1994 the 'Sanitary Latrine Promotion' programme. Activities undertaken include workshops/meetings and door-to-door counseling about improved sanitation practices and financing of procurement and installation of sanitary latrines through credit on easy terms. |
