The demand for maize as poultry feed ingredient is about nine laklh metric tones per year. But in-country total annual production is only two laklh metric tones - the rest of 7 metric tones being imported.
To meet the gap between supply of and demand for maize in the country, the Winrock International has been implementing the Bangladesh Rural Enterprise & Agricultural Development (BREAD-II) project. SSS as an implementation partner has been implementing the project activities in Hossainpur Upazila of Kishoregonj district. The specific aims of the project include the: - Enhancement of small farmers knowledge about maize cultivation through training and demonstration
- Encouragement of farmers to cultivate hybrid variety of maize
- Establishment of family based maize farm by directly involving the family members
- Ensuring highest possible return from limited land of the small farm-households to achieve food security and other basic needs
- Facilitating inter farmer communication and exchanges of information, farm management and identification of marketing problems
- Coordination among the extension workers, input suppliers, credit organizations and marketing agencies
