Sonar Bangla Children Home a Primary School   PDF  Print  E-mail

SSS BuildingSonar Bangla Home is a rehabilitation and education centre for sex workers.

There are more than 1300 sex workers in the Kandapara brothel in Tangail town, Bangladesh. Poverty is the root cause compelled them to be there. Poverty coupled with family and marital disorders perpetuate their stay in such disgraceful profession. They live in very dirty and unhygienic conditions and their children growing in such an environment are subject to humiliation and deprivation for want of paternal identity. As they grow up, male ones grow as criminals; while the female ones are engaged in sex business even before reaching the approved age.

In view of rehabilitation and education for these deprived children of the sexworkers, SSS has established the ‘Sonar Bangla Children Home & primary school at Kuizbari under Mogra Union of Tangail Sadar Thana. Located on its own land of 9 acres, two-storied nice looking Sonar Bangla Children Home is presently housing 100 children rescued from different brothels.

For proper education of inmates of this home, the boys and girls rescued from different brothels, this primary school has been equipped with modern education materials and motivated teachers.

The facilities available in this Home include free accommodation, food, clothes and health care, primary education, a wide play ground, sports materials, vocational education/training materials, cultural and entertainment amenities and, above all, affectionate care and proper education

Together with class room teaching, the boys and girls of this home routinely participate in different extracurricular activities like dance, music session, recitation, drama, marshal art, drawing, sewing and so on. Over and above a safe and ensured accommodation, the children in Sonar Bangla Children Home is being given quality food, clothes, education materials, sports materials and other daily necessaries; all free of cost.

In addition to the children of the sex workers being housed in the Home, the community children of the surrounding villages are also getting education from the Primary School in the same premise of Sonar Bangla Children Home. This provides an opportunity for the hitherto by-passed brothel children to come in contact with the children and their parents of the mainstream community and thereby developing in them a sense of belongingness to the society. Seemingly, this has very encouraging impact on their confidence level and human development.

By the time, a number of children have successfully completed their primary level of education and got admitted into nearby secondary school. Some of them have shown very good performances, occupying the top positions in their respective classes. Also they have gracefully positioned themselves through popular and highly appreciated cultural performances.

It is really an achievement that these children, who had so long been kept away from the mainstream society and getting them admitted into any schools was so difficult, are now being socially recognized and their exposure to the normal life is being gradually widening. What was a dream few years back, is now coming true day by day.

The objective of the program is to rehabilitate these brothel children on permanent basis to the society.
