Job Risks and Child Labour   PDF  Print  E-mail

Children in cigarette factoriesChild labour is contrary to child rights. But due to poverty, many children in our country are engaged in different activities for their livelihood. Bidi (i.e., cigarette) making is such an activity which is so hazardous, causing various diseases and retarding both physical and mental growth.

To discourage children making bidi as profession, SSS has been conducting motivational campaigns, counseling and providing health services. Also training and other support is extended to withdraw from bidi making and rehabilitate them in other better income earning activities.

Activities undertaken under this programme include:

  • Advocacy and awareness building through personal level counseling, community meetings, workshops, distribution of public awareness materials, street drama, and video show
  • Non-formal education, vocational training and job placement
  • Micro-credit to parents to start/expand IGAs to support the children withdrawn from bidi works
  • Health care services
  • Work place monitoring
