Special Education Center for Domestic Child Workers   PDF  Print  E-mail

SSS ChildrenPoverty is being the root cause; a significant number of children of the disadvantaged sections of the society are compelled to work for their livelihood at the age when they were supposed to be in schools. Of them, those working as domestic servants are subject to frequent torture and intimidation – retarding their normal growth and mental up bringing; that cannot but stir the conscience of any civilized man.

The number of such ill-fated children in Tangail is not small. Identified 300 such children, SSS at present is operating eight centers with the following broad objectives:

  • Prevention and protection of domestic child workers from torture and other forms of abuses by their employers
  • Where possible, withdrawal of children from such works and admission into school
  • Creation of alternate employment opportunities
  • Rehabilitation of the helpless children
  • Skills development training

To raise their working skills as domestic servant, this programme has provisions as well for training on cooking, receiving telephone calls, homestead cleaning, taking care of household furniture, cloth washing, attending guests and so on. Such training has proven to be quite useful and appreciated by the employers of their masters – thus positively changing their attitudes to the children working for them.

Participating in different programs of SSS, these children have by now gained confidence to a great extent and are more aware and assertive of their rights than before.

Regular discussions are held with employers , while the families of the working children are provided with free educational materials and healthcare facilities, along with micro-credit facilities to their parents.
